Consultant Orthodontist here · Saturdays, afternoon and evening
Practising orthodontics only since 2009, and a member of the Pakistan Orthodontic Association. My 2022 paper in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics was the first I carried out from end to end myself.
About the doctor
“I chose Orthodontics as it is very satisfying, to improve someone’s esthetics, their chewing function and correcting their bad occlusion. I always enjoy biomechanics involved in the treatment that I provide as it complements my artistic inclinations.”
Treatment generally runs about a year. Three visits in the first month, then once a month after that.
Education & credentials
- FCPS, Orthodontics, 2012 — College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, trained at the Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences.
- BDS, 1999 — Fatima Jinnah Dental College.
- Professor of Orthodontics — Bahria University Medical & Dental College.
- Consultant Orthodontist — Dr Arshad’s Dental Care, Saturdays, afternoon and evening.
- Member — Pakistan Orthodontic Association.
What I treat
- Braces, metal and ceramic — Metal is the lowest-maintenance and fastest route to the goal; ceramic where you would rather they were not seen.
- Clear aligners — Simple cases only. Extraction cases do not respond well to them.
- Children from age seven — That is when the permanent teeth are coming in.
- Adults — There is no age for orthodontic treatment.
- Impacted canines — Treated early, with fixed braces and slight arch expansion.
- Cleft lip and palate — Adults mostly, and newborns.

Pain, and time
More of a pressure. A two out of ten.
“more of a pressure… on a scale of 1-10 it should be a 2.”
Dr Tabassum, on what braces actually feel like.
The first year
Three visits in the first month, then one a month.
- Month 1
Three visits
The first month is the busy one.
Step 1 of 4 - Months 2–12
One visit a month
Adjustments, monthly.
Step 2 of 4 - About a year
Treatment finishes
Not the two or three many expect.
Step 3 of 4 - After
A retainer
PKR 17,000 per arch.
Step 4 of 4
Cleft lip and palate, adults and newborns.
Cleft lip and palate, adult patients mostly, but also the newborns, as there are few people who are trained to provide them with the quality care that they need.
My proudest paper
Effect of lip thickness and competency on soft-tissue changes.
American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2022
It showed how in extraction cases the profile changes according to the thickness of the lips.
Just because it’s an American published journal is NOT the reason. I had for the first time done the entire procedure from sample collection to analyzing to writing by myself.Read the paper
